The first round of the Papa Johns Cup started with a repeat of last years draw with Writtle hosting Canvey Island at Paradise Rd. Canvey Island off the back of their impressive cup final win last weekend were looking to repeat last years result. With total different conditions to the last few weeks the game kicked off in the sunshine with the ground firm. With both teams having to bolster their squads from their 2nd VX's the game was ready.
Writtle took the early lead through two James Gresty penalties, building on this positive start Writtle scored the first try through Ollie Redfern.
Canvey Island replied in the closing stages of the first half with a converted try.
The second half saw Canvey come out strongly and put the early pressure on, only strong defence kept them at bay. The half settled and Writtle again managed to score Ollie Redfern with his second try. A bit of breathing space for the home side was soon cut back with a strong attack was rewarded for Canvey with a converted try. With Writtle still leading , the home side put themselves under pressure trying to chase the game, which saw Canvey try and get the try levelling score, but Writtle scored again for Ollie Redfern's third try. The final score came from the hosts, with the returning Luke Bailey dotting down under the posts for Gresty to add the final points.
Writtle will now travel to Woodbridge for the next round on Saturday 20th April.
