So near for Writtle

The Essex cup first round fixture saw Writtle travel up the road to Old Brentwood's RFC. Both teams have had different seasons, with Old B's high flying in their division and Writtle having a difficult season, the home side were favourites for the match.
In near prefect conditions the game started strongly for Old B's with their big forwards creating good attacking platforms form which to attack. Soon they opened the scoring with a unconverted try. Writtle responded quickly with a fine break by Oliver Redfern splitting the home side defence open. J Gresty added the points. Writtle then continued to pressure Old B's and started to move their big pack around and played some good attacking rugby but the home side defended well. The last play of the half saw Steve Tully react quickly to gather a lose ball from the home side lineout and drive over for the try, Gresty knocking over the extras.
Second half saw Old B's get back into the match with another early try and conversion but Writtle again responded with the first of skipper Lawson Cook tries, a bursting run through the middle of the defence. Old B's showed why they finished runners up in their league by responding well with another converted try to keep within distance of Writtle. More Writtle pressure then resulted in a penalty. Gresty's kick hit the up right of the post, the away side again acted quicker and the ball was moved to Cook for his second try. The story of Writtle season was summed up in the closing stages of the game, as not having the bench to bring on fresh legs again cost the visitor. Old B's used there substitute's well and started to stretch the Wanderers defence, and eventually breach the line to score an equalizing try. With the game looking to go into extra time a final push saw the home side score the match wining try at the death to secure the game.
Again not for the first time this season Writtle fell short in the final stages of the game.
But lots of positivises should be taken from the game. Best 1st half performance of the season, back line looking sharp, lineouts strong and the scrum held up against a big opposition.
