No league game due to Dagenham dropping out of the league saw Writtle host a very strong Chingford 2nd team in a hastily arranged friendly.
A very intense opening quarter and some good forward play saw John Smilie touch down for a try in his first return game after a long spell playing for Braintree. The visitors raised their game and with some dominance early in the scrum fought back but were repeatedly held at bay by some resolute defending! Despite a very dominant line-out display from Writtle, Chingford continued to press in the second half and were gifted with an intercepted try to level the game.
Writtle had by then gained the upper hand in the scrums and a win against the head saw John Smilie pick up from 8 and break up the tight side, finally dragged down, support was there in the unlikely form of Zak Culleton who showed an unusual turn of pace to score in the corner.
Soon after, following a good run of possession a break and intelligent pass from Andy May put Jack Pearce through a gap and he out paced the defence to score under the sticks. Rob Ketley successfully converted. The last play of the game saw a great Chingford forward effort rewarded with a try.
A very hard fought battle and a deserved win for Writtle and a welcome return for a number of players.
